Freshening Indoor Air Naturally

If you or a member of your household has respiratory issues, or if you’re concerned about the danger of burning incense or spilling liquid wax, there are other ways to freshen the air in your home naturally!

Here’s some of our favorites:

Put coffee grounds through the garbage disposal occasionally, and even at the bottom of a new garbage bag in the kitchen to freshen these typically stinky areas.

Dried herbs and flowers including rosemary, lavender and roses  are a great way to provide a subtle hint of outdoor freshness in your bedroom, office, or any other areas where you need to relax and feel clear-headed.

Did you know that houseplants actually help clean the air? They DO! Wow, just having a few great indoor houseplants can help increase the amount oxygen and fresh air in your home or office, and they provide a touch of beauty too!

Simmering potpourri is a great way to “personalize” your air freshening.  Rummage through your refrigerator and spice rack, and put some of your favorite flavors in a pot of simmering water.  Using your favorite scent combinations like apple and cinnamon, oranges and cloves, or mint and lemon, you’ll be surprised how much you’ll enjoy  the natural scent of ingredients you already have right in your kitchen.

Vinegar is a great way to get rid of food smells and combat bacteria at the same time.  A solution of white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle can be spritzed into the air to combat strong odors like onion and garlic.

Do you have a great idea for a natural air freshener?  We’d love to hear about it.  In the meantime, we wish you a fresh, clean happy home!  Your friends at National Dusters.

Area Rug Cleaning Tips

Area rugs can really bring a room together and are often heirlooms that can hold treasured family memories.  Unfortunately, they also hold the dust, pet dander and grime from constant use.  Even though valuable area rugs should get a good deep cleaning from a professional occasionally,  there are steps you can take to keep your area rug looking and smelling fresh between deep cleans.

The first step to cleaning your area rug is remove pet fur / hair with a soft-bristled brush and vacuum both sides of the rug.
It’s best to do this on a warm, sunny day with no humidity as this will allow you to work on the rug in a clean outdoor space such as a driveway or patio.
Once you’ve give the area rug a good going over with a vacuum, and all surface dirt, dust, and pet hair has been removed, prepare a gentle cleaning solution using either a few drops of mild dish detergent in some water, or use a solution of 1 teaspoon of dish soap and 1 teaspoon of vinegar in 1 quart of lukewarm / room-temperature water.
NEVER USE HOT WATER on an area rug as this may cause shrinkage.
Test the solution on a small inconspicuous area of the rug to make sure dyes won’t run.
If the rug proves to be colorfast, go ahead and apply the cleaning solution by blotting the rug with a soft cloth soaked in the cleaning solution. NEVER SCRUB or rub hard as this may damage the fibers of the carpet, causing them to mat.
Work in small areas at a time, allowing the solution to set for 5 minutes or so, and then apply some water using another cloth to rinse the cleaning solution away.
Blot the wet area with a towel, and use a shop vac or hand-held vac on the backside of the carpet to remove as much moisture as possible.
Allow the rug to dry completely, flipping if necessary to ensure the carpet is completely dry before brining indoors.

Most valuable area rugs and accent carpets need to be professionally cleaned at least every 18 months (more if they are in high-traffic areas, or in homes with smoke or pets), but a gentle cleaning between visits to the professionals can keep all the area rugs and carpets in your home smelling fresh and looking their best.

The Pots and Pans You Really Need

Whether you’re just starting out in a small apartment, or downsizing to an “empty nest,” organizing your kitchen is a great place to begin to organize your home.  With so many kitchen tools available on the market, it’s hard to know what you actually NEED; what’s actually worth taking up that valuable cupboard space.

Most cooking experts agree, the pots and pans you can do the most work with, and which will be the most versatile are:

  • 8″ non-stick skillet
  • 10″ stainless steel skillet
  • Large stainless steel stock pot
  • 12″ Cast Iron Skillet
  • 4 quart stainless steel sauce pot
  • Colander

With these items you can do everything from fry an egg and prepare stir-fry for four, to simmer delicious chili and traditional cornbread for eight.  Most of these items can serve dual purpose, like a glass bowl over the sauce pot can serve as a double boiler, and the cast-iron skillet can serve as baking pan for hearty beer and corn breads.

That myriad of selection at the local kitchen specialty store may be shiny and pretty, but if you get creative, you can do just as much with fewer tools and an organized kitchen!  Happy and Healthy Cooking from your friends at National Dusters.

Are Professional House Cleaning Services worth it?

Are Professional House Cleaning Services worth it, or should I clean myself?

Before you decide to call a professional Twin Cities house cleaning service, you may want to consider a few things.  We’ve put together a list of things to consider when making this decision.

1. What Is Your Time Worth to You?

As we go through life, everything we do has a cost. Sometimes those costs are financial, other times you give up other assets, like time. What you give up is called an opportunity cost.

You can use opportunity cost as a method to decide what your time is worth to you. Maybe you make $20 per hour at work, or $50 per hour, and you consider your time to be worth that much. If your time is worth $50 per hour and the maid charges $25 per hour, you will likely find a maid worthwhile.

However, if you decide your time is worth $15 per hour and the maid charges $25 per hour, you should clean your home yourself, as the cost of the maid is higher than how you value your time.

When you have a professional  house cleaning services come clean your Eagan / St. Paul / St. Cloud MN area house like National Dusters, we can typically preform the home cleanings on your schedule. You wont have to give up a minute of free time cleaning your home.

-Do You Want a Cleaner Home?

Some people are better at cleaning than others. If you clean your home regularly, or at least every once in a while, and are still unhappy with the results, a House Cleaning Services could be worth a shot.

Your home will be cleaner after a professional House Cleaning Service visits.  Not only will your St. Paul area home be cleaner, but you can use that time to do the things your family enjoys.

-Consider Your Budget

A Recurring House Cleaning Service like National Dusters sets its pricing in a way that is affordable to you.  Visit here to see how its set up.

If you have any outstanding credit card balances or high interest loans, you should focus on paying those off first before looking to spend on a maid service. The same goes with meeting other priorities including your basic living expenses, emergency savings and retirement savings.

Consider also, a professional House Cleaning Service can save you time.  That is time you can put towards earning money, it may in fact pay for itself, or even make you money depending on your career.

-Independent vs. Corporate Maid Services

If you decide you can afford a professional house cleaning service and want to hire one, you have several options to consider. One of the most important is deciding between an independent maid or one who works for a professional home cleaning company.

Independent maids generally cost less, and 100% of the money you pay goes to the service provider. However, an independent maid may be less reliable and not have the same insurance as you will get through a service.

Professional House Cleaning Services like National Dusters offer have more flexible scheduling, as they have an entire team of expert cleaners.   Your services are guaranteed and there is no guesswork when dealing with your cleaning service.  Also with National Dusters you can have other services provided such as Carpet Cleaning, Tile and Grout Cleaning, and Upholstery Cleaning.

The Bottom Line

Decluttering Tips

house cleaning st. paulTips to de-clutter your St. Cloud / Eagan Mn. home

National Dusters can take care of all your house cleaning services but first you may want to go through and de-clutter your Eagan, St. Cloud, and St. Paul Mn Home.

If you are planning on selling your house, decluttering is a must!  A good clean house will sell faster and for more money!  Overwhelming clutter makes it hard for prospective buyers to see the true potential of a home, and may cause them to scratch your house off their list.

The failure to edit out years of accumulated stuff is a common mistake that many home sellers make.  It also allows for much more dirt and grime throughout.  National Dusters House Cleaning Service for Eagan, St. Cloud and the Twin Citites MN can clean your house to its full potential.

An added bonus to decluttering your home– earn money by organizing a yard sale!

For most of us, the thought of getting rid of years of accumulated clutter in our home is so overwhelming. Where do I start? What do I get rid of?  Let National Dusters, the House Cleaning Services experts help!

Why should you declutter your Twin Cities home?

Decluttering is probably the most important and time consuming step of home staging. Home staging forces you to finally deal with delayed home organization and unfinished projects.  Along with a home cleaning service like National Dusters, it can take a huge weight off your shoulders and allow you to finally think clearly.

When you are preparing to make a home sale, this task should be first on your to-do list. Sure, you can throw everything in boxes and deal with it later in your new home, but do you really want to do that?

Cluttered home office

A cluttered home can also give house hunters the impression that a home is dirty. They may imagine “critters” lurking in corners and under piles of stuff.

One of the biggest mistakes that home sellers make is not decluttering or keeping their home clean.  The focus first needs to be on organizing your items, one room at a time and one box at a time.  Then and only then should you have a Home Cleaning Service like National Dusters come in to help get the room in good as new condition.

Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Step 1.  Clear the trash.

Grab a large size trash bag and start by throwing out all the items you deem as trash.  Things you simply will never miss.  Bottles, wrappers, plastic, anything that you dont want needs to be thrown out first.

Step 2. Get boxes or containers.

Having these items gives you a start on sorting.  Before loading items, perhaps even write a title on the side of the box, “photo albums” or “living room” for example.

Step 3. Micromanage.

This is where things get tricky.   Its important to now decide on the personal value of each item.  What do you want to keep out, and what do you want to sell, and what do you want to throw away?  Make a section of each room for yard sale items, keep out items, donations, and put storage items into boxes.  Its important mentally to decide what items go together.  You’ll need to box things up according to their use.  Find ways to combine items into their own boxes.  Select only a few items to keep out.

Step 4. Organizing.

Once you’ve organized your items into areas and into boxes, you’ll need to consolidate.  Take all the yard sale items and store them in one area out of the way.  All the trash needs to be put on the curb or recycled. Then all the items you are keeping out can be put in their places.

Step 5. House Cleaning Services.

If you live in the Eagan, St. Cloud, St. Paul, or Twin Cities Minnesota area, call National Dusters to have your decluttered home thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.  It will be a load off your back to have a professional come in and get the house cleaning services done for you.  Its an easy and efficient way to get your rooms fresh and clean again. Selling a house?

Don’t let home buyers miss the beauty of your home’s interior design; that cozy fireplace hiding behind a bulky recliner, or the spaciousness of the kitchen hidden under all the appliances and cereal boxes strewn across the countertops.

Every room is important, no matter how small. If house hunters unleash an avalanche of objects when they open closet doors, they will instantly assume that there isn’t enough space in your home for their things! Great closet space is high on every home buyers want list.

Cleaning your house as you declutter will also add value to your home in the eyes of buyers.

 Psychology of clutter

A real buyer turn off! Home buyers don’t want to see your personal items.

Clutter is a deep and perplexing energy that can be a drain on mental health. A disorganized environment can lead to inner discord–we’ve all heard of “hoarding”, when clutter gets out of control and consumes our lives.

Unresolved clutter keeps you from doing the things you desire– you hope that maybe some day you’ll get it under control, but don’t know how or where to start.

Even if you’re able to organize your clutter by stashing it away in boxes in the attic, or reshuffling it out to the garage; you still know it’s there!

It’s simply shifted to a new space, preying on your conscience and preventing you from moving on.

What Qualifies as Clutter?

  • Unfinished projects that you plan to finish someday;
  • Clothing, shoes, bedding, appliances; anything that you haven’t used or worn for years;
  • Hobby clutter, sentimental pieces, overflowing collections and knick knacks;
  • Paperwork, children’s art projects, overflowing stacks of books and magazines, photographs that need to be organized, electronics with wires running out of control, and “mystery” boxes that have been stored in the basement or attic for years;
  • Over-flowing kitchen countertops; too many items or appliances strewn across the surface.

Storage ideas for moving

Before you begin to declutter your home, devise a plan for storing the boxes and furniture you’ll be taking with you to your new home. Hang onto the furniture and accessories that you plan to use in your interior home design for staging.

Storage Ideas:

  • If you’re lucky in your friends, they may let you store items temporarily in their garage or spare room.
  • Rent a storage unit for the short term.
  • Arrange for delivery of a storage pod right to your doorstep. (Check with local ordinances first.) Go to for more information. This company allows you to pack at your leisure, and will store or deliver your pod anywhere in the U.S., except Alaska. “Pods” also services parts of Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
  • If you have no other options, store your stuff in the garage or basement. This is a last resort, because the goal of home staging is to make EVERY room look spacious. If you must store things in the garage, be sure to stack items neatly and keep everything on one side of the room.
  • Make a plan for unwanted items; donate to a local thrift store such as Goodwill or The Salvation Army. Find out if there are any organizations in your community that will do pickups. If you have a lot of time, energy and helpers, organize a yard sale. Get your kids involved– they can be great helpers, and paying them from the proceeds of the sale can be a great motivator!

How dirty is my Carpet? 7 dirty secrets in your Carpet and Mattress.

How old is your mattress? What about your carpet? We’ve got the lowdown on what’s lurking below your feet and under your sleepy head.

Two of the most important and expensive investments in your home are your carpet and your mattress. But there are hidden germs lurking in two of the places you and your family use the most.

Rest assured, National Dusters is the St. Paul MN, Eagan, and Twin Cities area leader in Carpet Cleaning Services, Area Rug Cleaning, and Mattress Cleaning Services.

About carpets: Wall-to-wall germ farms

Research by Philip Tierno, Jr., Ph.D., New York University Langone Medical Center microbiologist, immunologist and author of The Secret Life of Germs, shows that your carpet is a lot dirtier than you think. In fact, it probably has about 200,000 bacteria per square inch. That’s about 4,000 times grosser than your toilet, in case you were keeping track.

About mattresses: Sleeping with the enemy

According to The Mattress Doctor, one of the most sacred places in your home, a place where you’re the most vulnerable, may be subject to invasion by bacteria and viruses, some of which have become more aggressive over the past several decades. Some are even resistant to antibiotics.

Those nasty little dust mites and allergens you always hear about aren’t the only things you have to worry about, unfortunately.

1. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus — This penicillin-resistant superhero of the bacterial world can run rampant in your carpet and mattress, especially if you have any athletes in the house.

They’ll bring it home from the gym or the locker room in that nasty gym bag you just realized you never wash, take off their shoes before setting a nasty dirt-covered foot on the carpet… and track in whatever they brought home after sweating through practice. You don’t just walk (barefoot) on your carpet. You play video games, wrestle, watch TV and more. Hopefully you don’t have a cut. MRSA loves those. Then it’s bedtime.

MRSA can be carried by healthy people for hours or even years. It causes red bumps that become more painful and larger over time and results in a fever and rashes. It only gets worse from there and can become untreatable, eventually leading to death.

Let's talk dirty

2. Campylobacter — Generally, this one is the most dangerous during the winter months, especially as you and the little ones track in bacteria-friendly dampness on those galoshes. It causes a potentially deadly disease known as campylobacteriosis, which can be dangerous to people with a compromised immune system, like small children or the elderly. Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain and fever.

Let's talk dirty

3. Norovirus — Also known as the Norwalk virus, Norovirus causes symptoms similar to food poisoning or even the stomach flu. It can survive in your carpet or in your bed for four to six weeks, and it becomes airborne as people walk or roll across it. If you live in areas with a prevalence of dust, like Texas, New Mexico or Arizona, you’re in even more danger.

Let's talk dirty

4. Fungi and mold — Several fungi and molds can invade your home, some of which can cause serious allergies and even death. Aspergillus, Rhizopus, Alternaria, Geotrichum and Cladosporium are all potential bedmates.

Let's talk dirty

5. Micrococcus — This one can be particularly nasty for those with compromised immune systems. It can cause some serious-looking skin infections, septic shock, meningitis (among other things) and even death.

Let's talk dirty

6. Enterococci —This one is actually a normal bacteria that exists in your intestines, but some species can cause serious infections in humans. It can cause urinary tract infections, bacteremia, bacterial endocarditis, diverticulitis and meningitis, and some strains are resistant to treatment.

Let's talk dirty

7. Other bacteria — These certainly aren’t the only things that can live in your mattress or carpet, so it’s important to take the proper measures to reduce their impact.

How are Commercial Carpets different from Residential Carpets?

Commercial Carpet Cleaning vs Residential Carpet Cleaning.

If you are a business owner or manager interested in buying a new carpet for your office space, you would be surprised how many flooring options are out there. Today’s carpeting provides myriad options designed specifically for a St. Paul or Eagan MN area businesses like yours. But, what actually makes something a commercial carpet product, rather than a residential one? Also, have you considered commercial carpet cleaning for your property?

Residential carpet, is all about comfort.  A home is a place where people can relax and enjoy their free time. So, carpet that is intended for residential purposes must be comfortable, appealing to the eye, and quiet. This type of carpet usually has taller pile and a fairly loose loop design. Both of these produce the plush feel that homeowners want from their carpet. High quality carpet for residential use is good for reducing noise levels and sound transmission and has excellent thermal qualities, keeping the home environment warm and energy efficient. It can also help to minimize injuries when falls occur, especially to toddlers and the elderly. Residential carpet can be installed wall to wall, or in carpet pieces. It can be glued to the floor, but also installed without adhesion. Residential carpets are available in various styles, colors, and patterns.

Commercial carpet is made to withstand a lot of foot traffic without looking worn, and that requires choosing the proper carpet specification for its intended use. This type of carpet is usually made with a tight loop and a short pile, giving it the density and thickness enough to withstand extra-heavy traffic on a daily basis. Some commercial carpets are made with an attached high density performance cushion or other PVC backing system, which give the carpet extra support for very heavy traffic areas such as hospitals or hotels. Design of commercial carpets is usually easy to fit in with various interior styles. They can also be cut in a larger variety of sizes and are generally less expensive than residential carpets, making commercial carpet a great option for large spaces.

Even though, residential and commercial carpets are made from the same materials, they are not always cleaned with the same methods.  Most of the time, professional residential carpet cleaning involves steam cleaning or hot-water-extraction method. It can remove more than 95 percent of dirt and bacteria from carpeting and it is best for dealing with pet urine and food stains. On the other hand, commercial carpet cleaning methods use low moisture. This method is highly efficient for removing dirt, grit, sand and allergens. However, in contrast to hot-water-extraction method, low moisture method has much quicker drying time, which makes it more business friendly.  If your St. Paul or Eagan MN. area business requires regular commercial carpet cleaning services, please contact National Dusters for a free quote.

When is the Right Time to Get Your Furniture Professionally Cleaned?

When to get a professional St. Paul area Furniture Cleaning Services.

Have you ever had your sofas, easy chairs, ottomans or padded dining room chairs professionally cleaned? If not, they could be detracting from your quality of life at home. You may also be setting the stage for faster wear and tear down the road. The following are some of the top signs that it’s time to consider professional furniture cleaning services:

1. Visible Dirt or Stains – Of course, this is the main sign that your furniture is in need of a reboot. Eating and drinking on or near your furniture opens the door to spills, food debris, smears, stains and the accumulation of germs. Allowing pets and children on the furniture increases this likelihood. With professional furniture cleaning services, even persistent or long-standing stains and spots can be removed.

stains on furniture require furniture cleaning

2. Accumulated Pet Hair and Dander – In addition to stains and germs caused by pets, dander and pet hair can accumulate in the furniture’s fibers. Not only is this unsightly; it can also increase the likelihood of an allergic reaction from you or your guests while sitting on the furniture. Waiting too long to address pet dander and allergens can dramatically lower the air quality in your home.

3. Odors – Even if you don’t visually see any stains or dirt, if you smell a strange or foul odor around your furniture, it is a sign that bacteria has accumulated in its fibers. Whether the odor is distinct or faint, any odor at all is an indication that it’s time for professional furniture cleaning services.

4. It’s Been More Than One Year – If you haven’t had your furniture professionally cleaned in a year or more, it’s probably due for a refresh. Even if it isn’t showing visible signs of dirt or staining, there is likely a cleanliness problem at the microbial level.

5. You’d Like Stain Prevention and Protection As Well – After your deep cleaning and refresh, furniture cleaning services can also provide an upholstery protection treatment to help prevent staining in the future. This service will assist in ensuring your furniture and living space are well preserved and a fresh, clean and attractive look can be maintained.

6. You Want the Best Care For Your Furniture – Premium care from professional furniture cleaning services ensures your furniture will be evaluated closely so that the best techniques and products can be used. Stains will be removed safely and effectively, and in a way that prolongs the life and aesthetics of your furniture and living room. Pre-spotting treatment, stain removal, and professional conditioning services are all included in the process. The best furniture cleaning companies also include pillow and cushion cleaning.

You vacuum, dust, wipe and declutter your living room, but are you giving your furniture the care and attention it deserves? Consider these six signs that the time might be right to look into furniture cleaning services. While you’re at it, you might also consider professional carpet cleaning services to give your living room a total refresh.
