It’s only new once. Remember when your carpet was brand new? You vowed you would take your shoes off when you came into the house and vacuum twice a week. No eating in the living room! If anything spilled, you cleaned it up immediately. While these are great promises to make to yourself, even the best-kept carpet needs to be cleaned regularly. And, if you are willing to admit that you have perhaps slacked off on these promises, your carpet might need to be cleaned more than you realize. In addition, there are other things you can do to keep your carpets looking great.

Your Carpet can “Look” New Again

Many people get their carpets cleaned and suddenly they see their carpet through new eyes, saying, “My carpets look like new!” It’s true, cleaning your carpets can make them look so much better that it almost feels like you have new carpet all over again. But, like everything else, carpet ages.

Color is usually the most important factor in how a carpet looks. As long as the color looks vibrant and there are no major spots or stains, most of us are quite happy with the look of our carpet.

But why does the color start to look tired after a few years even after our best efforts at cleaning? Why can’t we make it look new again? Isn’t that dull, lifeless appearance in the traffic areas just dirt? No doubt, dirt is a contributing factor, but there are three other factors that cause carpet to look old: abrasion, crushing and pile distortion.

Abrasion – Dirt is loose particulate soil tracked in from outside, including mud, pollution, pollen and gritty minerals that scratch and dull the surface of carpet fibers. This abrasion changes the way light reflects off of the scratched fibers so colors are muted. We call this permanent condition loss of luster. This is the primary reason that colors lose their vibrancy. Imagine a car that is scratched with sandpaper. No amount of cleaning can bring back the luster.

Pile crush – Areas that are subject to a lot of foot traffic will crush down and lose some pile height. The carpet loses its soft, fluffy appearance and feel. How severely depends on the fiber type, yarn density, pile depth and quality of carpet pad.

Pile distortion – When pile yarns lose their twist or the yarns are aligned in different directions, high traffic areas can appear dull and dingy. Once the carpet pile has become distorted it cannot be corrected. Some carpets are more prone to this type of appearance change than others.

Keeping Your Carpets Looking New Longer

Here are a few tips you can use to keep your carpet looking newer longer:

  • Keep soils out of the home as much as possible. Use doormats at all entrances and take off your shoes when coming in from outside.
  • Regular vacuuming is the best thing you can do to reduce damage caused by gritty dirt.
  • In areas where there is a lot of traffic, you can reduce wear by rearranging furnishings to redirect traffic.
  • Use carpet runners to limit crushing and pile distortion.
  • Regular cleaning before your carpet looks dirty is an important line of defense. Once soils have built up to the point of being obvious the damage is already done.
  • Applying a professional carpet protector after every cleaning is another great way to assure your carpet stays beautiful longer.

Remember, carpet is only new once but with care you can keep it looking good for years to come.

Top Reasons to Choose Carpet for Your Home

Remodel Your Home with Carpet

There are many good times to remodel your home. Some think spring is filled with rejuvenation and construction. Others say save it for the winter when outdoor activities come to a screaming halt. Whatever the occasion to give your home a facelift, installing carpet can be a great addition to any home.

If you’re considering remodeling your home this winter, there are a number of decisions you need to make. Budget, style, and design are all part of the process. One easy decision you can make is to include carpet as the flooring option for your home.

Top Reasons to Choose Carpet for Your Next Remodel Project

Whether you’re redesigning a recently purchased home or the home you’ve owned for many years, carpet adds value, style, and much more to an interior space.

Top Reasons to Choose Carpet For Your Next Remodel Project

1. Cost Effective Flooring

Carpet is one of the most cost-effective flooring options on the market. It offers value and many enhancements for your home. If you’re looking to upgrade your flooring, carpet is a great option and a great value.

2. Cost Effective (and Simple) Carpet Cleaning

Cleaning is another major benefit carpet has over other types of flooring. Some hard floor surfaces require extensive and expensive cleaning throughout the life of the floor. However, with Carpet Cleaning in St. Paul and Minneapolis, regular vacuuming and an annual deep cleaning are all that is necessary to keep carpet looking great and lasting for its intended life.

Top Reasons to Choose Carpet for Your Home

3. Design Options for Carpeting

Carpet offers so many options for you to create the indoor space you’ve always wanted. Color options allow you make a space appear more open, while a darker shade gives a room more coziness. The style of carpet offers can be related to comfort too. Cut pile, loop, and other designs allow you to give a specific feel and comfort for your indoor space.

4. Sustainability

Carpet’s sustainability factor is something not many people consider, but should be a part of your purchasing decision. The carpet industry has worked hard to ensure that its products are sustainable and environmentally friendly.

5. Comfort and Warmth

Carpet offers something no other flooring does: comfort. Carpet provides sure footing and traction that other floor surfaces do not. Also among the other benefits of carpet is insulation. Many surfaces are cold on your feet, but carpet helps keep your feet warm.

6. Indoor Air Quality with Carpeting

Another often overlooked consideration for your purchasing decision is indoor air quality (IAQ). IAQ is becoming more-and-more important in today’s world as the EPA reports that we spend approximately 90% of our time indoors, which puts a premium on the air you breathe.

Carpet improves IAQ by trapping dust and allergens in the home, which are removed through vacuuming, and by certifications like Green Label Plus, which certifies that carpet is a low emitter of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Overall, carpet is a great flooring option you should consider for your home. Its benefits are well known and will add to the value, comfort, and health of your home.

Fall and Winter Home Check-Ups:

Inspect Now, Save Thousands Later. As the seasons change so does your home. Seasonal changes in temperature and humidity cause some materials to shift and expand. Other materials may become brittle and shrink, allowing energy-stealing cold and damaging moisture to enter during the coolest months of the year. Knowing what is happening in your home and fixing small issues before they become big is important.

Also, when fall and winter approach the air becomes dryer and cooler. Temperatures are more comfortable, making outdoor tasks more bearable. That is the perfect time to get your home ready for the winter months. Following are some recommendations for preparing your home for cooler weather. These suggestions are

Following are some recommendations for preparing your home for cooler weather. These suggestions are relatively simple to do for the active homeowner. Though, you may find it safer and more convenient to hire the services of a qualified home inspector to do some of these checks or to interpret your findings.

Reduce Moisture Entry and Energy Loss through Windows and Doors.

Look around your doors and windows. How does the caulking look? Caulk should be smooth and tight to the surface being sealed. If it is cracking, brittle and deteriorated, it should be scraped out and replaced. Check the seals. Is the weather stripping intact? Do windows close and seal properly? Are the door seals tight, or can you see daylight or feel air coming in around the door?

Watch Out for Water Intrusion

Check the attic. If you have an attic, go up and have a look for any signs of water intrusion. Most roof leaks start small, and the damage is minimal if caught early. However, chronic moisture problems caused by undetected leaks over a long period of months or years can cause thousands of dollars in damage. Check for darkened areas on wood that could be caused by leaks.

healthy, wealthy & wise - National Dusters cleaning company

Protect the Structure

While you are in the attic, look for gaps around chimneys, plumbing stacks and other penetrations through the roof. The  rubber seal around plumbing stacks is called a boot. An inexpensive “boot” replacement now may prevent very costly damage later. So look up from below the pipe and make sure daylight is not shining through; daylight might indicate a cracked boot. Also, take a look at the insulation and fill in any gaps where heat can escape. If your insulation is looking a bit thin, now would be a great time to add another layer.

Gutters are designed to capture and control water, directing it away from the structure. However, if gutters become clogged with leaves and other debris, water may overflow the gutters and enter behind fascia boards and even under shingles. This creates an environment for wood rot and mold.

Top Reasons to Hire a Green Cleaning Company

Hire a Green Cleaning Company in the Twin Cities

Like most people, you’ve probably spent some time considering “green” products when it comes to cleaning your house. Maybe you’ve even considered a cleaning company in Minneapolis or St. Paul that offers green cleaning products.

As our lives become busier every day, it’s easy to purchase the latest products that promise to make annoying chores like cleaning, even easier. When searching for a bathroom cleaner, you probably grab one of the bright colored bottles on the shelves that is strategically placed from a well-marketed brand. Have you ever really thought about what is in that bottle, though?

Whether you’re a professional housekeeper or someone who keeps their home tidy every week, you should take the time to consider “what’s inside the container”.

green cleaning company in St. Paul
Everyday household cleaners offer a host of harsh chemicals that can linger in your home.

Most cleaning products are made up of harsh chemicals, which can be very bad for your health. Your kids and your pets’ health can suffer from this too. In today’s age, people are re-thinking what they’re bringing into their homes, and they’re looking for greener solutions.

Green Cleaning Company in Minneapolis
Many household cleaners give us early warning signs of what is to come.

Here’s the top reason why you should consider a green cleaning company in the Twin Cities.

A Cleaner, Heathier Home

Did you know the American Lung Association lists household cleaning products as a major indoor air pollutant and contributor to chronic respiratory problems such as asthma? Johns Hopkins also released a study showing that children’s exposure to antibacterial products can make them more prone to a wide range of food and environmental allergies.

If you go green, you’ll greatly reduce the chance that there will be chemicals absorbed into the skin or breathed in by the person cleaning. Chemicals can linger in the air, also affecting other persons in the home.

Studies have shown that using a household cleaning spray, even as little as once a week, raises the risk of developing asthma. Using green cleaning products can potentially reduce the chances of developing asthma. Asthma has been reported as the most common chronic illness and the leading cause of school absences due to chronic illness across the country today.

Purifying Indoor Air

Let’s face it. If you unleash “Kaboom” in your bathroom, your lungs taking a beating. In fact, you may have to exit the room for a while. Did you know that the use of conventional home cleaning products can contribute to higher pollution indoors than outdoors? Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), largely associated with health problems like damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system, are released when products are used and stored in your home.

They can also linger in the air long after use according to the article “An Introduction to Indoor Air Quality” by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This should be taken seriously if you’re concerned for your family’s health. You can breath easier by using true green cleaning products.

Disclosure of ingredient lists

Much like the beauty industry, manufacturers of cleaning products aren’t required by the U.S. government to divulge ingredients. And you can bet they don’t, because they’re toxic. Many green cleaning manufacturers, however, make it their policy to be fully transparent and list ALL of their ingredients – largely because there’s nothing to hide.

As concerns for health become more prevalent in today’s society and people become more educated on the harsh effects of cleaning chemicals, they’re going back to basics and looking for greener ways to clean. For the DIY home cleaner, this may involve a lot of vinegar, lemon juice, and natural oils. For the busy professional and even busier families out there, finding a Green Cleaning Company that offers monthly maid services is the way to go.

Fewer Antibacterials

Many people are now trained to look for products that blatantly say “antibacterial”. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has changed gears and now tells us that washing with antibacterial soaps isn’t any better than regular soaps. In fact, The American Medical Association (AMA) says that the frequent use of antibacterial ingredients can promote bacterial resistance to antibiotics. A common antibacterial agent found in many soaps is Triclosan, which is known to have an effect on your hormonal system and thyroid.

Most green or environmentally friendly cleaning products don’t contain antibacterial agents.

Give Back to the Community

There’s no mystery behind the benefits of green cleaning products. Though they can come at higher costs of production, the benefits to green, organic, healthy and clean are all pretty apparent. But what else?

Many manufacturers of green cleaning products take social responsibility very seriously. You’ll often find they even have requirements to working with them, such as their containers are mostly recycled or their vendor’s processes follow some sort of green path. Often these companies will also give a portion of their profits to organizations that further social, environmental, and educational change.

So what is green cleaning?

Green cleaning is all about using products that are safe and healthy for you and the environment, and about employing eco-friendly cleaning practices. It’s also about using products from conscientious companies with sustainable business practices.

There’re so many benefits to going green when it comes to cleaning your home. At National Dusters, we offer a complete line of Better Life cleaning supplies.

Keeping a Clean Home with Pets

How to keep a clean home with pets

Keeping a clean house when you have dogs, cats, rodents or even fish tanks, might seem impossible.

For those of us  who love our furry friends and other family pets, another layer of de-fur-balling is added to our daily and weekly house cleaning routines. So here’s a few tips to help guide you through the jungle.

Start with the basic principles of house cleaning

Ok, so we’re not assuming you don’t know how to keep your space clean, but often times people simply forget to integrate common chores into their daily lives. Suddenly there’s a mess to clean on day or company swing by and you’re embarrassed by it. Here’s how to head it off.

  • Brush or comb your pets. If your little princess looks like Ewok, so will your couch and the corners of your home. Loose pet hair can quickly turn into blobs of hairy dust balls.  Your central heating and cooling system will love it to.
  • Use a pet bed or designated spot for sleeping.  Keeping fido off your favorite chair while you’re relaxing in it, is a discipline that not many humans can master. In fact, dogs and cats often do a superb job of training their people to accommodate their relaxation needs. But if you can train them to sleep in their own space, the amount of hair and “stuff” that spread throughout the house will stay at a very manageable level.
  • Animals eat at their eating station. Simple – keep their mess contained.
  • Wipe off paws when coming in from outside. Easy right? Well its another due diligence thing, but many people just let dogs come in from the back yard and have at it. Dirty! Keep a towel by your door or designate a paw wiping area.
  • Close off rooms that your furry friends do not need to be in. Why give them the run of the house when you’re the one cleaning it.

Keeping your home clean with pets

    Focus on high traffic areas

The high-traffic areas in your home are also likely to be the main places where your house where your pets like to hang out with the people. Your cleaning regimen will tend to have a significant amount of resources focused here.  Consistency is the key to success, whether you have one pet or five. Stay on top of high traffic areas.

    Maintain tile and hardwood floors

Its a grass-roots project. You have to start from the beginning and strive for taking control of the situation. Vacuuming once a week is highly recommended. To extend the of your carpets, you may want to have a more aggressive routine. If you have hardwood floors or other hard surfaces, you’ll want to run a Swiffer around regularly as traditional sweeping will just blow the fur around the house.

If you clean your floors more than once per week, you’ll notice that the time it takes to do the task will shorten quite a bit, and the usual clumps of hair laying around unexpected places will slowly disappear.

To kill germs and sanitize the area thoroughly and often, you might consider steam cleaning hard floor surfaces, such as tile or stone. You might also just hire a monthly recurring maid service.

Kitchen Cleaning Tips – From Cabinet to Countertop

Every kitchen needs a deep clean now and then. Sometimes, though it may appear clean, there’s deep seeded grime that you may not realize is a problem through daily use. Let’s get right into it and point out some great kitchen cleaning tips – from cabinet to countertop.

Cleaning Stone Countertops

Refresh your granite or stone. You can remove most coffee, juice or other stains with a hydrogen peroxide / water solution. Kitchen designer Florence Perchuk, says a few drops of ammonia added to this solution does the ultimate trick. For everyday wear and tear of your stone countertops, buff away small scratches with superfine dry steel wool called “grade 0000.”

What is the Best Way to Clean Grout?

One of the best home remedies out there is to mix baking soda and water together as a homemade cleaner. Pour half a cup of baking soda into 2 gallons of water. The baking soda cleaner should take most stains out of grout, as well. If there are tough stains, don’t flood the grout with a cleaner – that is not effective. For serious discoloration you need to call in a pro. Removing the grout is only necessary when it’s cracked and water can seep through and damage the floor underneath.

How to Shine Your Kitchen Floors

The endless task of presenting your home in a brilliant fashion, starts with the gathering place for family, friends and company – the kitchen. So how do you keep those floors beautiful? Shine your kitchen floors with vinegar. For wood floors, get yourself a bucket and mix nine parts warm water to one part white vinegar. Its an inexpensive, age-old trick that makes your floors dazzle with sparkle!

How to Remove Tarnish from Brass, Pots & Pans

Wait for it… KETCHUP. That’s right, ketchup. Now there’s a better use for Americans to re-purpose their ketchup desires. And it won’t even matter if high fructose corn syrup is in it or not. To remove tarnish from copper and brass fixtures, pots, and pans, just dab some onto a soft cloth and gently rub. Finish by rinsing with warm water.

De-Gunk Your Cabinets

Every kitchen has this problem; cabinet “gunk”.  Bacon grease, boiling water, sautéing veggies, etc. It all gets in that wood and all over your hardware. What to do? This DIY cleaning staple is as widely known (or an unknown hidden gem..) as vinegar and baking soda.

Make a solution that is one part vegetable oil and two parts baking soda. This will result in a magical solution for cleaning gunky kitchen cabinets. Work the wood with a sponge, old toothbrush or maybe even your hands. Whatever works!

Little Unknown Kitchen Cleaning Tips

Now for the fun stuff; the stuff we use everyday that probably irritates you.

How to Clean Your Blender

This is a tip that has  cropped up on the internet. After you pour your smoothie or drink from your blender, take the pitcher straight to the sink. Put in a little water and a drop of dish soap, then put it back on the blender, and turn it on for 20 seconds. Rinse it out and you’re done. BOOM!

How to Power Clean Your Microwave

The quickest way to clean a microwave oven is to place a handful of wet paper towels inside and run it on High for about 3 minutes. The steam from the towels will soften everything sticking to the walls. Once the paper towels are safe to touch, simply pick them up and sue them to wipe the interior of the microwave down.

To deodorize the microwave, combine 1 cup of water with a half cup of lemon juice in a measuring cup or a mug and also heat it on high for about 3 minutes. Let it stand for 10 minutes or so afterward and you’re now smelling sweet!

Kitchen cleaning tips. how to clean your microwave

How to Refresh Your Coffee Pot

Your coffee pot, we suspect, is the most used item in your home. If you have a glass pot in your setup, it can very quickly develop a brown haze all over, especially if you leave it warming for long periods of time. The quickest cure we can find to eliminating this grossness involves ice, salt and a lemon.

Fill the empty jug a quarter full of ice. Cut the lemon into quarters and squeeze two of the quarters into the jug. Add 2 tablespoons of salt. Swirl the mixture in the jug for 2 minutes and the inside surface will quickly come clean. Rinse it out; you’re ready to fuel up again!

Clean Your Cast Iron Pans

If you’re a Chef or cook of sorts, you know that you should never use liquid soap on a cast-iron pan and never scrub it with anything abrasive if you want to maintain its well-oiled nonstick surface. And you absolutely should NEVER run them through the dishwasher. So should you clean it?

One simple answer. SALT. If the pan will not rinse clean with water and a soft dishcloth, rub it with a few tablespoons of salt and a paper towel, and rinse. You can replenish the oil film by coating the inside surface of the pan with a dab of cooking oil.

Top cleaning tips for moving
National Dusters Monthly Recurring Home Cleaning Services

The Prep to Move

Let’s talk about getting ready to move out. The place needs  a thorough cleaning and walk through. Whether you’re selling or have a landlord, there are expectations from the opposing party, so let’s get crackin’!

Define the cleaning regimen. Get a realtors walkthrough or landlords checklist. Often times “broom clean” is a term that is applied to this scenario, but that real ambiguous. You need to understand the expectations and have that conversation. The last thing you want to do is incur a surprise expense or have to come back, when you’re getting settled into your new home. Keep in mind, you only need to do the bare minimum. The owner or management company will likely come in with a cleaning company or construction projects anyway.

Here are the basics. Walls:

  • Remove nails and hooks from all walls. If the walls have been damaged beyond just a “hole” in the wall, you may want to touch them up or spackle them.
  • If you’ve painted the walls anything other than a neutral color or white, and you rent the space that you are in, you may want to consider painting them back. Many apartments, condos, rented town homes, etc will require this.
  • If there are funky marks on the wall or stains that don’t belong there, hit them with the magic eraser or some other cleaning technology that makes life easier.

Floors

  • Sweep everywhere! Its common courtesy but also makes a huge difference when entering a space.
  • If there are spills, residue or unidentified sticky substances pull out your swiffer and go to town. Its not nice to leave those things behind.

Bathroom

  • Its imperative that the bathrooms are free of hair and mold and toothpaste yuckies. So, once you’ve gotten everything packed up, head in with a some CLR or your favorite bathroom spray and cover the place – head to toe. While that is marinating away, sweep the floor or wet swiffer it if needed.

Kitchen

  • Kitchen is big… you don’t ned to aim for perfection; remember the bare minimum is all you need to do. There are some areas that may have seemed fine to you, because you’re used to your own dirt, but take a second look at how potentially disgusting the refrigerator is. The inside of cabinets may be in the same condition from cooking oils, baking goods and spice racks. The easiest approach here is probably to use and all purpose cleaner and spray the whole place down. Then come back with a towel to wipe it down in about 10 minutes.

Other areas of concern

  • Window ledges. If you’re like most people, you’ve not looked at them for  years and they are, well… disgusting. Wet down a cloth or paper towel and get in there with a little elbow grease. Stray hair, dirt, all that stuff… gross!
  • Repairs. This could be the hard part and you may possibly identify the difference between normal “wear and tear” vs. things you probably should have replaced quite some time ago. Lack of upkeep and broken items simply turn into “damage” and you might be stuck taking care of that if you had not previously.
